Mount Rainier

Monday - Tuesday, September 05 - 06, 2005
Almost every day during the summer while bicycling to work I look up at Mount Rainier. I used to wonder what things look like from up there. This year, I decided to find out. I booked a guided trip up the Disappointment Cleaver (DC) route with RMI.

As it turned out, I was in great shape to climb the mountain. I had no trouble at all and it actually seemed rather easy to me. I did not feel any effects of the high altitude...perhaps because the pace set by the guides was slow and steady. I would have preferred to climb at a somewhat faster pace.

I was lucky enough to get to climb with RMI guide Dave Hahn.

I've also climbed Rainier via the Inter/Emmons/Winthrop Glaciers. Click here to see that trip.

I'm always looking for an excluse to go climbing -- if you're looking for a climbing partner, let me know!

Upon returning to Ashford, I was greeted by my Aunt Sandy with my dogs Buddy and Harley! Sandy left the dogs with me and returned to her campsite (5 miles outside Ashford). The plan was for me to say goodbye to everyone and then meet her at the campsite before we departed our seperate ways.

Well, things did not go as planned. 1 mile down the road, a tire on my truck went flat and then came clear off the rim. I didn't have a good spare because I had also had a flight tire on my drive to Ashford two days earlier. With two flat tires, the truck wasn't going anywhere.

There was no cell phone reception, no payphones, and no open businesses in the area. Worried that Sandy might pack up and leave, I ran 4 miles down the road to the campsite (yes, this is after climbing Rainier the same day). 30 minutes later, I found Sandy pulling out of camp. She very nicely took me to a gas station where I planned some flat-fixing supplies.

A scary looking motor-biker at the gas station offered to help me with my prediciment. Back at the truck, he showed me how to mount/dismount a tire onto the wheel and how to apply a patch. With his help, we got one tire partially inflated.

Sandy and I returned to the campsite and stayed overnight. The next morning, I made it home with the truck and the dogs.
