Mount Higgins

Sunday, June 19, 2005

It was one of those days when the weather was just too nice to be inside. I should have been packing for my upcomming fishing trip...but I just couldn't do it. Instead, I took the dogs on a hike up Mount Higgins.

Mount Higgins is a peak north of state route 530 between Arlington and Darrington, WA.

When we got close, we found that the road was closed 4 miles from the trailhead (and 1500 feet below the trailhead). That didn't stop us.

There was also a bunch of recent logging activity in the area. Additionally, there were numerous side roads and no obvious trailhead sign. It took us about 3 hours including 3500 vertical feet of climbing before we found the trailhead.

From the trailhead, it was another 3500 feet to the top. On the way down, we stopped at Myrtle Lake where Buddy enjoyed a very refreshing swim. Hiking back up from Myrtle Lake to the trail was 500 vertical feet.

Total vertical climbing for the day was therefore 7500 feet. That's a record for me! Certainly, it was a long afternoon.
