McCoy Canyon

Easter Sunday (April 20), 2003: Sandy, John, and I go hiking in McCoy Canyon, near the Priest Rapids Dam, near Mattawa, WA.

A gate across the road was closed and locked, so we were not able to drive to our planned trailhead.  No matter.  We parked at the gate and started bushwacking up the hills.  Start time about 12 noon; Starting elevation: 430 FASL.

PICT0622: We decided to risk a steep and unknown way down.  We headed down a valley not knowing if we'd be able to make it down to the river shore, or if we'd run into 500 ft sheer vertical cliffs and be forced to turn around.

PICT0625: We made it down okay!  There was just one little close call with a rattlesnake...  Here we are relaxing by the Columbia river.  Note the cliffs in the background.  We came down from up there.
